about
Suffolk Bikes is a student group at Suffolk University. We aim to cultivate facilities, events, and a community that will make SU the most bike friendly campus in Boston.
Our work includes helping students find bikes, teaching those new to cycling how to stay safe, encouraging regular commuting, sharing the pleasure with everyone via group rides and workshops.
Got a bike question? Ask us. Need help finding a shop? a component? a helmet? We are here for you.
Formation:
The idea for our group was borne from a Service Learning Project in an Environmental Politics and Policy Class taught by Campus Sustainability Coordinator Erica Mattison.
We hold all campus based Service Learning and Community Service campaigns in very high regards because of this. It is essential for students to interface with the post-university application of their major skills early and often.
2008-2009
After Graham and Greg stopped buzzing from getting an A on the project and putting something on YouTube we knew there was no question of the importance of a campus bike community and that Suffolk Bikes had to keep going.
We worked with Campus Sustainability and the Suffolk University Police Department to convince the school that our goals were noble and necessary. With this we accomplished such goals as: removal of derelict bikes from Suffolk Campus. The reconditioning and redistribution of 4 of these bikes.
After a year of the long and arduous process of registering a new group- Suffolk Bikes became officially recognized by the Student Government Association of Suffolk and we had hit the big time. We took on Jason Black and Bianca Pettinicchi and the 4 in the Floor was complete. We had, an E-Board. The right to use Suffolk’s name, access to funds, and even a budget for 2009-2010. We were as happy as kittens chasing leaky cows.
Even though Jason was mourning the death of his Raleigh Grand Prix and Bianca was boat-lagged from a semester at sea; we came together quickly to accomplish a lot before the 08/09 year was complete.
